Benefits of disposable contact lenses
Daily contact lenses are gaining in popularity among practitioners and patients for their health and convenience benefits.
How do I know when to dispose of my disposable contact lenses
As part your contact lens exam with us, our doctors and staff will give instructions on how to wear your contact lenses and when to dispose them. Don’t wear contact lenses longer than designed. A daily disposable lens should be thrown away every day. A biweekly disposable lens should be thrown away after 14 days. A monthly disposable lens should be thrown away after 30 days. To maximize your lenses benefits, be sure to follow your eye doctor’s prescription and recommendations.
How safely dispose unwanted contact lenses
To protect our environment, we ask that you property dispose used contact lenses as recommended by the manufacturer. You can always bring us the old contact lenses to dispose for you. Researchers at Arizona State University have concluded that one-fifth of disposable contact lens wearers flush their used contacts down the sink or toilets when done using them. This amounts in 10 metric tons of microplastics flowing each year into our wastewater plants and later our waterways, which poses a problem for fish and aquatic life. It’s estimated that up to 45 million Americans wear contact lenses. Researchers surveyed 400 users and found that 19 percent of those said that they flush the used lenses down sinks or toilets. That may be because the lenses themselves have a watery feel to them and users assume they are made to be flushed.
