Illuminate your life. Don’t let keratoconus dim your light.
– Dr. Lauretta Justin, Millennium Eye Center
Did you know that a seemingly invisible condition could be silently stealing your vision? Keratoconus, a progressive eye disorder, affects the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. Every November 10th, we observe World Keratoconus Day to shed light on this often-overlooked condition.
What is Keratoconus?
Keratoconus causes the cornea to thin and bulge outward, resulting in distorted vision. Symptoms can include blurred vision, sensitivity to light, and frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions.
Why is Awareness Important?
Early detection and treatment are crucial in managing keratoconus. By recognizing the signs and seeking timely medical attention, individuals can slow the progression of the condition and maintain good vision.
How Can You Protect Your Eyes?
While there’s no definitive cure for keratoconus, several strategies can help manage the condition:
- Regular Eye Exams: Schedule routine eye exams with Millennium Eye Center to monitor your eye health and detect early signs of keratoconus.
- Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL): CXL is a non-surgical procedure that strengthens the cornea and can slow the progression of keratoconus.
- Corneal Implants: In severe cases, corneal implants may be necessary to improve vision.
- Contact Lenses: Special contact lenses, such as rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses or hybrid lenses, can correct the irregular corneal shape.
