What does an antioxidant do?
According to the Mayo Clinic, Antioxidants are substances that may protect your cells against free radicals, which may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Free radicals are molecules produced when your body breaks down food or when you’re exposed to tobacco smoke or radiation. Antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E and carotenoids, help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Carotenoids are antioxidants found in many fruits and vegetables. Beta-carotene is one carotenoid that you may be familiar with. Other carotenoids include lutein and lycopene, to name just a few. Many scientists believe that carotenoids may be partly responsible for the observed associations between increased fruit and vegetable intake and lower risk of many diseases. Other naturally occurring antioxidants include flavonoids, tannins, phenols and lignans. Plant-based foods are the best sources. These include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices, and even cocoa.
What is a BioPhotonic scanner?
The BioPhotonic Scanner is one of the technology used to measure antioxidants. BioPhotonic Scanning is a form of cutting-edge testing that non-invasively measures carotenoid levels in living tissue with the purpose of determining the patient’s overall antioxidant levels. The scanner works by producing a narrow beam of blue light that is focused on your skin.
The scanner has been validated by:
- Yale University Cancer Center
- Stanford University
- Harvard University
